Cottage In The Meadow Fairweather Grove Tree Planting
On June 5, 2010 over 100 people - local members from at least 5 different churches came together in the Season of Service to help hospice friends, donors, and volunteers plant 200 trees as the first of the Fairweather Grove honoring the generosity of the Fairweather Foundation's million dollar challenge. Families, young and old, gathered together to plant these trees that will serve as the backdrop of the future Meadow. A brief ceremony honored Art and Joanne Hall's Fairweather Foundation and all those who have joined together on the Cottage project to get it to the present $2.3 million mark. The community came together and experienced a wonderful day in the out of doors!
Thank you Safeway! Safeways have just donated $11,893.73 to The Memorial Foundation from their Safeway Foundation Employee Giving Program for hospice, specifically Cottage in the Meadow. All of this year's contributions from Safeway are matched by the Fairweather Foundation for Cottage in the Meadow. The N. 5th Avenue Safeway store had the largest employee participation level in the company's history, 128 out of 130 employees participated in their campaign to benefit hospice.
For the past two years more than a dozen local community members have served as "ambassadors" for Memorial Hospice speaking to churches, service and fraternal organizations, and a variety of other groups. More than 50 presentations have been given - from Cle Elum in Kittitas County to Prosser in the Lower Yakima Valley. These ambassadors have spread the news about the wonderful value of hospice to families at the end of life and explaining how the new hospice house, named Cottage in the Meadow, will serve as a home for in-patient hospice and respite care in Central Washington. This group of volunteers is led by Carol M. Loudon who herself had two family hospice experiences. "Her tireless efforts have meant that hundreds of citizens in Kittitas and Yakima counties now have been told the hospice story and challenged to help us make a residential hospice care home a reality in Central Washington", said Mark Young, hospice development director. They have spoken to car clubs, retirement groups, and golf teams to expand the awareness and support for hospice in Central Washington.
Cottage in the Meadow will be built on 48th Avenue in Yakima, near Randall Park, as funds are raised in our community. The Cottage will eventually provide 20-private rooms in a home-like environment for families who can rally around their loved ones as death nears. It will also provide respite care for weary homecare-givers who need a break for a few days. More information can be found at www.yakimahospice.org. If groups wish to schedule a hospice presentation, call Carol Loudon at 509-952-1052 or to request more information on Cottage in the Meadow, call Mark Young at 509-574-3626 or email at mark.young@memfound.org.
