About Yakima Hospice Care
Bereavement Services

Grief changes everything. We'll help you manage the change-and the grief.

After your loved one's death, you may feel guilt, or loneliness, or regret, or numbness, or anger, or denial, or shock, or relief, or peace…or any combination of these. This is normal. And each one of us grieves differently, so don't be surprised if you can't relate to others' experiences, or they can't relate to yours.

You may find yourself transitioning from a sense of numbness to a feeling of deep grief in those first weeks. Music, smells, environment, and even other people may trigger memories and feelings of tremendous loss.

Let others be part of your healing process. Whether you have one person to help you during this time, or you seek counseling or a support group, you need to know that there are people willing-and ready-to walk alongside you on this journey.

You are not alone.

Hints for Supporting Grieving Friends/Family

If you have a friend or a family member that is grieving, you may find yourself not knowing the appropriate thing to say or do. The best thing is to be present. Let the grieving person know that he/she is cared about. It is better to say nothing, or to even say something like, "I don't know what to say," than to stay away.

If you want to offer to help, then think of something specific:

"I'm going to bring you a meal next week; which day would be best?"

"Would you like me to stay at the house during the funeral?"

"I take my dog for a walk each afternoon at 3 p.m. May I stop by and pick up your dog for a walk, too?"
